The Big Weatherman in the Sky

Job 37:10-13: “By the breath of God ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen. Also with moisture He saturates the thick clouds; He scatters His bright clouds. And they swirl about, being turned by His guidance, that they may do whatever He commands them on the face of the whole earth. He causes it to come, whether for correction, or for His land, or for mercy.”

Two thirds of the United States awoke this morning to a hard freeze. Record breaking low temperatures stretched from the Upper Midwest all the way down into Florida. All of it has been caused by a so-called “polar vortex” of frigid air which has spilled down from the North Pole.

Meteorologists and scientists are constantly trying to predict the weather. Back in 1999, former Vice President Al Gore, and others, warned of an impending “global warming’ which would melt polar ice caps by 2014. As someone has sarcastically pointed out, it is 2014 and the polar ice is still there. In fact, a group of scientists were recently trapped by ice in the seas of Antarctica and had to be rescued. The purpose of their mission? To study the effects of global warming!

While we snicker about these issues (and wrap ourselves up in blankets), let us be reminded of this one thing: God is complete control of His planet. The weather and the elements do whatever He commands them to do, all for His purpose and design. Rather than fret over the weather, we would do well to simply trust the One who brings it our way. As long as He is in control, we have nothing to fear.

So, bundle up, drink a cup of warm brew, and think about warm, sunny days. They will be here before we know it.

Father, I know that you are in control of the weather. Everything that happens is because You have ordained it. Help me to trust You with every area of my life. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
