“For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.”
Today is Richard Penniman’s 81st birthday. Born in Macon, Georgia, “Little Richard” became a legend in the world of rock-and-roll music, making his mark with the legendary song ‘Tutti Friutti” in 1955.
What many people don’t know about Little Richard is that he has had a lifelong struggle. Raised in a religious background, Penniman is actually an ordained minister. On several occasions, he has gone into full-time ministry as an evangelist, preaching the Gospel and singing gospel music. But then, the lure and temptation of rock-and –roll would come back and Little Richard would give into his flesh. Oftentimes, his lifestyle was filled with sex, drugs and alcohol. He has fought the battle right up into this very year, telling a recent audience that they needed to prepare for the return of Jesus.
All of us face the daily war. Our sin nature (the flesh, as the Bible calls it) is fighting against the desires of God’s Spirit within us. As believers we know what the right things are, but the flesh keeps us from doing those things.
The war can only be won as we submit ourselves daily to Jesus. A daily prayer time is essential. A daily time of Bible reading can be of great benefit. Everyday requires a total surrender of our will to the Lord. His will must be in control of us. We must “walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16) in order to resist the desires of sin.
